August 15, 2005
The August meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was a picnic held
at
Chris Roll's home. Twenty-five members were present.
The business meeting followed the picnic and social time. The minutes
of
the May, June and July meeting were read with two corrections.
No
official treasurer's report was available but Joan estimated
the amount in
the treasury at about $800.00.
President Bev Youngs read two thank you notes, one from Patti Paquette's
sister who visited with us on the July garden tours and the other
from
Leslie Askwith. Patti‚s sister commended the group for all
the great work
we do and enclosed a check for $25.00 to go towards our civic
projects.
Leslie thanked the garden club for helping with the FOCAS Garden
Tours.
Discussion was held on the scholarship and it was decided that we
would
continue doing what we did last year, offering it to a high school
student
and if no qualified applications were received, then we would
go with a
college student.
A motion was made by Fran Preuss and seconded by Carol Askwith that
we
increase our donation to the St. James Church from $100.00 to
$l50.00.
The motion carried.
A motion was made by Connie Mattson and seconded by Linda Sumner
that we
allocate $200.00 for the purchase of books, and videos for references
for
club members. Donations of material would also be appreciated.
Chris
Roll, Susan Harries and Bonnie Skoryanc volunteered to coordinate
this
library project.
President Bev Youngs reminded club members that the September meeting
will
be the seed exchange, annual dues of $20.00 will be due in September,
the
Master Gardner Program will start and we will make troughs again
on
9-10-05 at 1:00 P.M. at her home.

Dorothy Dansdill made a motion that we accept the slate of officers
as
presented. Carol Askwith seconded the motion. Motion was carried.
A list was passed around for suggestions for programs for the
2005/2006-year. A sign-up sheet for the raffles was also passed
around.
Carol Askwith reported that the flowers at the Soo Locks Park are
looking
great and she thanked everyone who has worked on them. She hopes
to
compile the total number of volunteer hours worked by members
this summer
and get an article in the local newspaper. The automated sprinklers
are
now working in the gardens in the front and they run 45 minutes
each
evening.
Linda Carrick reported that the sesquicentennial committee would
be
planting a time capsule in one area of the locks garden. She
will get
more information so we will know if some plants have to be moved.
Bonnie Skoryanc suggested that individuals still wanting shirts
with club
logo could just stop in and order them. We may still have a group
order
for sweatshirts.
Sheryl Shaul asked if we could try having the plant exchange in
June
instead of May and maybe we would have a better selection of
plants. A
lot of the plants in the cool north are not up in May. It was
agreed that
we could do this next year.
Connie Mattson , membership chairman, suggested that we send out
letters to former members inviting them to come back to the club.
Everyone
thought this was a good idea.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
