The June meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was called to order at 7:15 by President Kate Marshall at the St. James Church. Thirty four members and guests were in attendance.
Minutes of the May meeting were read and approved. Joan Clark reported that there was a balance of $1335.02 in the treasury.
There were three new members; Phyllis Ruesser, Amy Lee and Cathy Chenowith, and three guests; Carol Brawley, Ann Eitrem, and Katie Miles, in attendance.
Show and Tell
Bev Youngs brought in a container with milkweed and a Monarch caterpillar. She told us about the life cycle of the Monarch and offered the container to any club member who would like to follow the cycle and share with their family.
Bev also showed the group a peony that was in the process of being preserved in a solution of glycerin and water. (1/3 glycerin-2/3 water)
Ruth Molino showed her beautiful “Mischievous” Iris, telling us she had feed it well with bone meal in the fall and Connie Mattson shared a picture of her beautiful Rhododendron in full bloom.
It was reported that a Red Honeysuckle bush had been purchased and planted at the 1st C hurch of Christ in memory of Pat Artley, and Bev Youngs indicated she had donated a white Phlox in honor of Pat at the Sault Locks Park.
It was also reported that Andrea Barry’s rain garden project at the Cedarville school was on hold.
Marcy Misner has written an article for the Evening News on the process of purchasing plants in Canada and bringing them back to the U.S.
Dorothy Dansdil indicated that last year’s scholarship winner may apply again.
The July 17th Garden Tour will include the gardens of; Kathy Rye, Linda Carrick, Amy Lee and Bev Youngs. The group will meet at 6:30 behind the Askwith properties on West Portage.
On August 21st, the club membership will meet at the church and travel to Slayter’s garden and greehouse and then have our annual meeting and picnic at Cathy Chenowith’s home.
Suggestions for a spring garden tour included: Jon and Marian MacLeod, and Jean Smith,
Diane MacDonald shared information on a bulk order of spring bulbs.
Dorothy Dansdil mentioned she had Relay for Life luminarias to purchase.
Carol Askwith indicated that Sault Locks work will take place between 9-11 on Thursdays.
The group then proceed with the plant exchange.
Refreshments were provided by: Diane MacDonald, Kristen McDonald, Emily Grenfell and Nancy Fenlon . The meeting adjourned at 9:20 p.m.
