The November meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was held on November 21st, 2005 at the St. James Church with 26 members present. Meeting was called to order by president Kate Marshall. The minutes of the October meeting were read. Motion was made by Chris Roll, seconded by Linda Beaumont to approve. Treasurer’s report was given by Bev Youngs showing a balance of $1,203.09. Motion to approve was made by Bonnie Skoryanc and seconded by Cheryl Shaul to approve. Motion carried.
The speaker for the evening was Andrea Berry from the Co-op Extension Agency. She spoke on “Rain Gardens” and showed a video on the process. She also said there is one being done in Cedarville on the High School. She answered questions and had hand-outs.
Bev Youngs gave a report on the library. There is a dozen or so books and other materials ordered. They are pretty much set to go by January meeting. Donations of books and materials will be accepted and there will also be a wish list. A herb book was requested.
Dorothy had show and tell of fall and winter arrangements. Bev Youngs, Dorothy Dansdill, Jean Sylvestre, Shelly Partridge, Ruth Molino, Kate Marshall and Charlene McDonald brought in sdisplays.
December 17th at 10:00am will be the workshop making centerpieces and arrangements for Christmas. Bring your own containers and extra greens, pine cones, ribbons, decorations, clippers, wires and anything else that mey be used. Members may also make extras for raffle at the December 19th Christmas meeting. That evening will start at 6:00 with appetizers and desserts and then have the “Yankee Gift Exchange”. Members are to bring a gift valued between $5 and $10.
Under Old Business, new members need to pay their dues and their X-mas present will be the garden club notebook. This needs to be done so the membership lists can be printed.
Questions placed in the flowerpot were:
1. How do you winterize a butterfly bush?
They just die down, then cut back a foot until spring and then cut down. Doesn’t need covering.
2. How do you force bulbs?
Pot first and then cool in refrigerator 10-12 weeks, bringing out gradually. The best flowers are tulips, hyacinths, narcissus, daffodils.
3. How do you winter geraniums?
Take out of pot and hang. Can also put in basement window, when they get tall and spindly, cut back.
There will be a Board Meeting at 5:30 before the meeting on December 19th.
Refreshments were served by Connie Mattson and Chris Roll. The Raffle was held by Linda Beaumont, Jeanne Cooper and Chris Roll.
