Minutes

October 17, 2005

The October meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was held on October 17th, 2005 at the St. James Church. The meeting was called to order by president, Kate Marshall. The minutes of the September meeting were read. A motion was made by Dorothy Dansdill and seconded by Sheryl Shaul to approve. The treasurer’s report was given showing a balance of $699.92.

Carol Askwith gave a report on the locks garden. Several members helped in the bulb planting so there should be a lot of flowers in the spring.

Under old business, members were reminded to pay their dues and pick up their binder and handouts.

Kay Cook, Lisa Roese and Cathy Person provided the refreshments for the evening. Chris Roll, Fran Preuss and Pat Artley provided the raffle items.

Show and tell for this month was flower arrangements in a pumpkin. Dorthy Dansdill, Bev Youngs and brought in displays.

Under new business, show and tell for November will be a door decoration or a wreath. Kate Marshall showed an example of a door decoration she made in a Halloween theme.
Speaker for the November meeting will be Andrea Barry and her topic will be rain gardens.

Pat Artley has the soil tester for October and will store it for the winter unless someone else requests it.

Questions placed in the flowerpot were:

How do you know when to cut back a hydrangea?

Most hydrangeas are cut back after they have bloomed. Peegee hydrangeas flower on new wood and should be cut back in the spring.

How do you store the trough gardens in the winter?

Bev reported she just stored hers under a bush or pine tree and they survived the winter just fine.

How do you kill creeping myrtle?

The best way is to just dig it up. Also, if you have a bed of creeping myrtle and it is full of weeds, it is almost impossible to get the weeds out. Your best bet is to dig it up, clean the weeds out of the bed and start over.

Can you start tree peonies from seed?

No one had an answer for this question but it will be researched and reported on at the next meeting.

Members brought in dried flowers and other items for the evening project, which was to make a floral arrangement. Carol Askwith showed several arrangements she had made and then we got started. Each member made a floral arrangement to take home.

Members enjoyed refreshments while making their floral arrangements.
