SAULT AREA GARDEN CLUB The September meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was held Monday, September 21, 2009 at the St. James Church. The Co-President, Phyllis Bigelow welcomed 30 members and guests at 7:00 p.m. The Treasurer’s report indicated $1,768.11 in the treasury. Three visitors were introduced and welcomed. A discussion was held regarding the FOCUS Group no longer doing the garden tours as a fund raising project. Linda Beaumont reported that the Red Cross was interested in picking up the garden tour program with the help of interested Garden Club members. Jeanne Smith, Jeanne O’Callaghan, Kate Marshall and Andree Watson expressed a desire to become a part of the Red Cross Planning Committee for the project. Bev Youngs demonstrated and assisted members in making seed envelopes from old catalogs, wrapping paper, or newspaper. Bev then demonstrated the art of potting and forcing bulbs to have color during the dreary months of winter. A hand-out was provided with instructions for indoor bulb planting, plus many hints Bev gave the group. Diane McDonald had a show-and-tell of interesting rocks she had gathered and painted, including a lady bug family, to be placed in her gardens. Refreshments were provided by Dorothy Dansdill, Selden Collins, and Molly Paquin. Raffle prizes were provided by Bev Youngs, Connie Mattson, Joanne Landini and Jeanne O’Callaghan. A seed and plant exchange then took place with members using the seed envelopes made.
